⚠️
Important for 2025–26 Students

The DSE Spot Round is conducted only after CAP Round 4 (Institute Level) for seats that remain vacant. It is typically held in September–October 2025. Always verify exact dates at dse2025.mahacet.org before applying.

What is the DSE Spot Round?
Understanding Maharashtra's final admission opportunity for Direct Second Year Engineering

The DSE Spot Round (also called Spot Admission) is the last chance for Diploma Engineering students to secure admission into the Second Year (SE) of a B.E./B.Tech programme in Maharashtra. It is conducted by DTE Maharashtra after all four regular CAP rounds are completed and seats still remain vacant at various colleges.

During the Spot Round, candidates who could not get a seat in CAP Round 1, 2, 3, or 4 β€” or those who got a seat but want to change their college or branch β€” can directly visit participating colleges and apply for available seats on a first-come-first-served basis. Unlike the regular CAP process, there is no online option selection or centralised allotment in the Spot Round.

Why is the Spot Round Important?

For many students, the Spot Round is their last opportunity to secure admission in the current academic year. Seats available in the Spot Round are often in popular branches like Computer Science, Information Technology and AI/ML at unaided colleges where last-minute vacancies open up due to students upgrading to better colleges or cancelling their allotment.

Additionally, the Spot Round typically sees significantly lower cutoff percentages than CAP Round 1 or 2, which gives borderline students a genuine opportunity to get into a reasonable college and branch combination that would otherwise be out of their reach.

Who Conducts It?

The Spot Round is conducted jointly by DTE Maharashtra (Directorate of Technical Education) and the State CET Cell (Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test Cell). The schedule and participating colleges are announced officially on the DTE website after CAP Round 4 results are declared.

For example, a Diploma in Computer Engineering student can apply for Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, AI/ML, Data Science etc. Cross-branch applications are allowed but subject to DTE approval and seat availability.

Who is NOT Eligible?

Students who have already taken admission in CAP Round 1, 2, 3 or 4 and have not cancelled their allotment before the Spot Round deadline are NOT eligible to participate in the Spot Round for a different college. Additionally, students with pending document verification issues from earlier CAP rounds must resolve them before appearing for the Spot Round.

Step-by-Step Process
How to participate in the DSE Spot Round 2025–26 β€” from preparation to final admission
1
Check Spot Round Announcement
Visit dse2025.mahacet.org or dtemaharashtra.gov.in regularly after CAP Round 4 results. DTE publishes the Spot Round schedule, participating colleges list, and available seat matrix typically in September 2025.
πŸ“Œ Bookmark both websites and check daily after CAP Round 4 results are announced.
2
Download the Spot Round Seat Matrix
DTE publishes a Spot Round Seat Matrix showing exactly how many seats are available at each college for each branch and category. Study this carefully to identify which colleges have seats in your preferred branch and category.
πŸ“Š Use our website to see which colleges offer your preferred branch, then cross-check with the official seat matrix for Spot Round vacancy.
3
Prepare All Documents
Collect all required documents listed above and make 3 sets of photocopies. Arrange them in a file. Documents must be self-attested (sign on each photocopy with date). Carry originals separately in a plastic folder for verification.
πŸ—‚οΈ Use a checklist β€” missing even one document can result in rejection. Gap certificate is commonly forgotten by students who took a year off.
4
Visit the College on Spot Round Day
On the designated Spot Round date, reach the college early β€” ideally by 8:00 AM even if reporting time is 9:00 AM. Seats are allotted on a first-come-first-served basis, so arriving early is critical especially for popular branches like CSE and IT.
⏰ For high-demand colleges like MIT Aurangabad, PICT Pune or VIT Pune β€” students queue up from the previous evening. Plan accordingly.
5
Document Verification at College
College staff will verify your original documents, check your merit rank, confirm your category, and validate your eligibility. This process can take 30–60 minutes per candidate. Be patient and cooperative.
βœ… If any document is not in order, the college may reject your application. Have backup copies of everything.
6
Seat Allotment and Fee Payment
Once verified, you will be offered an available seat. If you accept, you must pay the first-year tuition fee on the same day (usually by DD/online transfer). Unaided college fees typically range from β‚Ή85,000 to β‚Ή1,50,000 per year depending on the college and branch.
πŸ’° Carry sufficient cash or pre-arrange a DD/NEFT. Many colleges accept online payment but always confirm in advance.
7
Obtain Admission Confirmation Letter
After fee payment, collect the official Admission Confirmation Letter / Allotment Letter from the college. This is your proof of admission. Also collect the college identity card application form and fill it immediately.
πŸ“„ This letter is required for hostel admission, bus pass, scholarship applications and all other purposes. Keep multiple copies safe.
8
Report to College for Classes
Report to the college on the first day of classes (usually within 1 week of Spot Round). Complete remaining formalities β€” scholarship applications, hostel registration, library card, laboratory registration etc.
πŸŽ“ Check if your college offers a Tuition Fee Waiver or scholarship through DTE. Many government-aided colleges offer significant financial assistance.

Which Cities Have Most Spot Round Seats?

Based on previous years, cities with the most Spot Round seat availability include Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Nagpur, and Mumbai. Smaller district colleges often have more seats available in Spot Round than prestigious autonomous colleges in major cities.

Category-wise Seat Distribution
How seats are divided across different reservation categories in the Spot Round

The Spot Round follows the same reservation structure as the regular CAP rounds. Seats are divided into the following categories as per Maharashtra government norms:

G vs L Category β€” What's the Difference?

G = Government quota seats (managed by DTE/Government). L = Ladies seats reserved for female candidates within each category. For example, GOPEN means General Open Government quota, and LOPEN means Ladies Open (female candidates in open category). Female candidates can apply for both GOPEN and LOPEN seats, while male candidates can only apply for G-category seats.

Should You Wait for the Spot Round?

Only if you didn't get your preferred branch/college in CAP rounds. If you have a reasonable allotment from CAP rounds, do NOT cancel it waiting for Spot Round β€” the Spot Round has very limited seat availability and is not guaranteed. Spot Round is best for students who received no allotment in any CAP round or those who received an allotment in a branch they strongly don't want.

Expert Tips for Spot Round Success
Proven strategies from previous years' successful DSE Spot Round students
⏰
Arrive Before 7:00 AM
Spot Round is first-come-first-served. Popular colleges like MIT Pune, PICT, VIT Pune see queues forming from 6–7 AM. If you arrive at 10 AM, all CSE seats may already be taken. Set an alarm and be there early.
πŸ“‹
Research Before You Go
Study the Spot Round seat matrix carefully before deciding which college to visit. Don't travel 100km to a college only to find your category's seat is already filled. Call the college admission office the evening before to confirm.
πŸ—‚οΈ
Documents Must Be Perfect
Missing a single document can cost you the seat. Use our document checklist and verify every document 2 days before. Many students lose seats due to missing gap certificates, caste validity, or income certificates.
πŸ’°
Keep Fees Ready
Carry a demand draft for the approximate fee amount OR have mobile banking ready. Some colleges accept UPI/NEFT on the spot. Don't lose a seat because you couldn't arrange fees on the same day.
πŸ“ž
Have a Backup Plan
Identify 3 colleges (not just 1) from the seat matrix. If your first choice college has no seats left, go to your second choice the same day. Don't waste the day going home empty-handed.
πŸ”
Check Accreditation Status
Use our website's NBA badge to identify NBA-accredited colleges. Getting a seat in a Spot Round at an NBA-accredited college is better than a higher-ranked college without accreditation for placements and higher studies.
β›”
Don't Cancel Your CAP Allotment Rashly
Never cancel a CAP allotment just to "try" the Spot Round unless you are 100% sure about a better option. Spot Round seats are limited and not guaranteed. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
🚫
Beware of Touts and Agents
Some people near college campuses claim they can "arrange" a Spot Round seat for money. This is fraud. All Spot Round admissions are officially done by DTE/college staff. Never pay anyone for "guarantee" of a seat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common Spot Round questions from students
Can I appear for the Spot Round if I already got a seat in CAP Round 3? +
Yes, but you must officially cancel your CAP Round 3 allotment before the Spot Round deadline. If you appear for Spot Round while holding a CAP allotment without cancelling, it creates legal complications and DTE may reject your Spot Round admission. Always cancel properly first.
Is the Spot Round conducted online or offline? +
The DSE Spot Round is conducted completely offline. There is no online option entry or centralised allotment. You must physically visit the college on the designated Spot Round date, queue up, get your documents verified, and pay fees on the spot. This is very different from the regular CAP process.
What if I can't attend on the designated Spot Round date? +
You cannot send a representative in your place β€” the candidate must be present in person for document verification and identity confirmation. If you cannot attend on the designated date for valid reasons (medical emergency etc.), contact DTE directly. However, in most cases there is no provision for rescheduling, and the seat will go to another candidate.
Are Spot Round seats available at all 344 colleges listed on this website? +
No β€” only colleges that have vacant seats after all CAP rounds participate in the Spot Round. The official Spot Round seat matrix (published by DTE in September 2025) will show exactly which colleges have seats and in which branches and categories. Typically 150–200 colleges participate in the Spot Round, but this number varies each year.
Can a student from outside Maharashtra (OMS) participate in the Spot Round? +
Yes, Outside Maharashtra State (OMS) candidates who are registered for DSE 2025–26 can participate in the Spot Round for the OMS quota seats. The OMS quota is 15% of total intake at unaided colleges. Check the Spot Round seat matrix for OMS seat availability.
How is the Spot Round different from Institute Level Round (CAP Round 4)? +
CAP Round 4 (Institute Level Round) is conducted before the Spot Round. In Round 4, colleges fill their remaining seats through a centralised DTE process. Only after Round 4 is complete and seats still remain vacant does DTE conduct the Spot Round. The Spot Round is therefore the absolute last stage of the admission process for DSE 2025–26.
What fees do I need to pay at the time of Spot Round? +
At the time of Spot Round admission, you typically need to pay: (1) Tuition fee for one year as fixed by DTE/Shikshan Shulka Samiti β€” ranges from β‚Ή60,000 to β‚Ή1,80,000 depending on college type, (2) University registration fee β€” approximately β‚Ή3,000–₹5,000, (3) Other college fees β€” library, laboratory, development fee etc. Total first-year fees typically range from β‚Ή80,000 to β‚Ή2,00,000. Bring sufficient funds or a demand draft.
Is the Spot Round merit-based or strictly first-come-first-served? +
The Spot Round is primarily first-come-first-served within each category. This means if 5 SC category seats are available and 10 SC candidates queue up, the first 5 in the queue get the seats regardless of their percentage (as long as minimum eligibility is met). However, if more candidates than seats are present, colleges may apply merit as a tiebreaker β€” this varies by college.
Can I take admission through Spot Round and still apply for scholarships? +
Yes β€” students admitted through the Spot Round are eligible for all government scholarships including EBC/OBC/SC/ST scholarships, Tuition Fee Waiver (TFWS), and merit-based scholarships. The mode of admission (CAP or Spot) does not affect scholarship eligibility. Apply for scholarships through the Maharashtra Scholarship Portal as soon as classes begin.
My Diploma percentage is exactly 45% β€” can I still apply? +
Yes β€” 45% is the minimum qualifying percentage for the Open/General category, so you are eligible to apply. However, at 45% you will only get seats where the Spot Round cutoff is at or below 45%, which typically means branches like Civil Engineering, Production Engineering, or Chemical Engineering at smaller unaided colleges. Use our eligibility checker to see which colleges have cutoffs around your percentage.
